Matt Vs. The NFC East

The National Football League's NFC East division has a long and storied history.  Every year the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, Washington Redskins, and Dallas Cowboys compete for the division crown in hopes of going the distance and winning a Super Bowl Championship. This season has been a transition year  for all of these teams. The Eagles are having a surprising season helmed by new coach Chip Kelly and 2nd year Quarterback Nick Foles while the Redskins are following up their 2012 Division with an abysmal 3 win year and internal division. The Cowboys are one game behind from the Eagles in the division but many question the team's ability to win with their backs against the wall. The Giants have struggled as well, starting their season with six straight losses. Their 2 time Super Bowl MVP QB Eli Manning has proven to be a turnover machine. Among all the teams, defense is currently something that is being left out in the cold. So where does that leave us?

As a Philadelphia Eagles fan I saw the Andy Reid era go down in flames last year. While there was years of playoff success, players including Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, and Brian Dawkins were unable to bring a championship to the City of Brotherly Love. This new era of Eagles football is fresh and I'm unsure how the whole thing will turn out because there are questions about the team's future direction. The Giants have been a good team in the past enhanced by a stout defense but that is no longer a fact. The Redskins are in turmoil with infighting between coach Mike Shanahan and QB Robert Griffin III and a lack of heart. The Cowboys have been mediocre for years and have only won a single playoff game under QB Tony Romo. To boil this year's NFC East down, the bad teams are horrible and the good teams are average at best. It is a far cry from where the teams dominated the NFC in decades past. There is a great possibility that the division crown will be decided by the Eagles-Cowboys matchup during the last week of the season. I feel that the whomever the winner will be beaten by superior teams in the first round of the playoffs.

All four of the teams need some changes (Defense) in order to become forces to be reckoned with in the NFL. This season has had its ups and downs and while I do hope the Eagles win the division, it has been an interesting ride.

Matt Vs. Sonic Colors

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has gone through many changes over its two decade existence. From its birth on the SEGA Genesis and transition to 3-D on the SEGA  Dreamcast to its struggles throughout the last decades, many wondered if Sonic would ever be good again. Since Sonic Adventure  2, I have played several newer Sonic games including Sonic Heroes and Sonic and the Secret Rings however theses titles were mediocre at best. A new game would be announced raising fan expectations and the final product would be a disappointing mess and this same cycle continued for years. Sonic Colors for the Wii and along with Sonic Generations for the Xbox 360 and PS3 helped change this perception. Sonic Colors' plot is fairly basic, Sonic and Tails visit Dr. Robotnik's interstellar amusement part and have to rescue the aliens that the doctor has captured there. The overall tone of the game is similar to those of Saturday morning cartoon shows with voice acting that fits. Unli...

Matt and the Joker's Five Way Revenge

Last year saw the passing of acclaimed comic book writer Denny O'Neill. O'Neill had a long history with many DC Comics superheroes as a writer and editor and is best known for revitalizing the character of Batman among others starting in the 1970s. I decided to pick up a copy of one of the more famous Batman issues of this era, Joker's Five Way Revenge which was written by O'Neill and drawn by Neal Adams. The story featured in Batman # 251, was released in November, 1973. While I am gaining a better appreciation for 1990s comics, I largely avoided avidly reading 1970s issues due to their seemingly dated nature and tropes. After reading this issue, I had some thoughts on both how the character and mythos of Batman has evolved over time and a greater appreciation for a more grounded Dark Knight. In Joker's Five Way Revenge, the Joker is seeking revenge for a presumed betrayal by killing members of his former gang and Batman is striving to stop him. By the time t...

Matt Vs. IndeGo/ Philly Bike Share.

Over the last decade, the bicycle riding scene in Philadelphia has been growing leaps and bounds. This has paralleled the rise of neighborhoods such as Fishtown that are near adjacent to Center City Philadelphia. Philadelphia tight grid street layout and system of bike lanes makes bicycling a rather convenient mode of travel. Last April, Philadelphia deepened its relationship with biking culture with the launch of its bike share program called Indego . Indego is the newest bike share program created by a partnership between the City of  Philadelphia and Independence Blue Cross. The program features many stations spread across Central Philadelphia where riders can rent out bikes using either cash or credit cards. When I was in Washington, DC I was sorely attempted to test their bike share program but could not due to time constraints. When IndeGo Bike Share opened Philadelphia I jumped at the chance to give it a go. The ride itself was rather smooth but it was hard t...
